Well-bred filly PHILIA added an important metropolitan win to her page when she broke through first-up at Doomben on Wednesday.
The half-sister to multiple Group 1 winner Duais showed great determination to fend off the persistent challenge of the runner-up under Cejay Graham, who now has eight wins and a second from her last 12 rides at Doomben.
After opening her account with back-to-back runner-up finishes, PHILIA was sent for a spell and returned a more furnished product, as evidenced by her strength at the end of the 1350m trip.
Having broken smartly from the gates, the daughter of All Too Hard took the race by the scruff of the neck, and despite being challenged in the home straight she was pulling away on the line to score by two lengths.
“She’s a lovely filly with a massive stride on her,” said Graham.
“She went out there and made my life very easy today. We didn’t necessarily intend to lead, but once she bounced out of the gates we were able to take control of the race. The tempo that we were going, I was always pretty confident she would be hard to beat.
“She gave a good kick, and I was really pleased with the way she pulled away and put a margin on them. She’ll definitely get over further ground judging by that win.”
Many congratulations to the Harris family and Irving Racing.
