Former South Australian SO BENE made an instant impact for the stable when she delivered a dynamic debut performance at Doomben on Wednesday.
The mare had just one win to her name from 25 career starts prior to her arrival in Queensland, but there was no doubting her desire as she powered home in the Fillies and Mares Class 1 Handicap (1350m).
SO BENE is Stakes placed over 2600m but proved she is equally adept over shorter distances when she ran down the leaders under Justin Huxtable, who was very taken with the decisive manner of the victory.
“After getting back in a slowly run race, that was a superior performance,” he said.
“I was probably following another horse that I didn’t really want to be behind, so to roll off its heels and pick up the runaway leader was very impressive.
“I’m sure there will be more to come, but that was a very good start and it’s obvious she’s got great versatility.”
The victory marked her first success since March 2021, many congratulations to her owner John Star.
