After learning a valuable lesson in a recent trial, NOBLE DECREE shed his maiden status with a confidence-boosting win at Ipswich on Wednesday.
Whilst undoubtedly possessing plenty of ability the son of Per Incanto perhaps hadn’t acquired the art of winning until yesterday, when he showed professionalism and determination to break through in the Maiden Plate (1200m).
NOBLE DECREE had finished second at three of his four previous starts, but his recent trial win put the 3YO in the right frame of mind and he duly took his earnings past $50,000 with a first victory.
Noel Callow, whose last three rides for the stable have now produced a trio of victories, gave NOBLE DECREE a confident ride as the pair hit the front at the 200m mark and held on strongly to score by three-quarters of a length.
“He trialled really well coming into the race,” said David.
“He had some really good runs last time and performed well, but we didn’t have the opportunity to take him through his grades which I would’ve liked to have done. So it was a bit of a messy prep and we hadn’t taught him to win, so I have to blame myself a bit for that.
“He almost got used to running second in his races and at the trials, and in his last race he just didn’t want to go past the leader. So in the recent trial, I told Noel to give him a dig and make sure he wins so that he knows what it feels like. He did that and it might have been the making of him.
“You could see in the pre-race that he was really here to do his work today, and he’s become more of a warrior. He got to the front quite early so I got a bit worried, but to his credit he stuck on and was strong to the line.”
Many congratulations to Ron and Judi Wanless.
