Trainer David Vandyke labelled MATRIARCH ROSE “a filly with a future” after she launched late to make an eyecatching debut at Ipswich.
The filly built on an encouraging trial at the Sunshine Coast last month to make a winning start to her career in the 3YO Maiden Handicap (1350m).
Despite being nearer last than first with 400m to travel, MATRIARCH ROSE sprouted wings to run over the top of them under Michael Cahill.
The manner of the victory - which earned a $20,700 cheque for her connections - certainly impressed her trainer.
“I must admit in her first prep I didn’t have too high an opinion of her,” confessed David.
“She was going through the motions in her first two trials, and she looked like she didn’t know what to do. But her improvement has been quite amazing.
“She really hit the line nicely in her last trial, and I think that sparked her up and was a bit of a wake-up call. She brought that to the races and judging by that performance, I think she might be a filly with a future.
“She was still very raw and gangly and was wandering all over the place. She looked a bit lost and if she hadn’t won we probably would’ve put the blinkers on next time, but I don’t want to change a winning formula.
“Michael kept her balanced and took her through her gears, and I think she’s going to win some nice once she figures it all out.”
Congratulations to her owners: Sundance, Mooglebird Racing, Rosie's Empire, Nordburg, Mr B D Clarke, Mr J Kendrick, Mr A N Kendrick, Dr P Frazier, Mr G C McMurray, Miss J M Willis, Mr M G Willis, Mr N R Willis, Mrs P A Willis, Mr B K Willis and Miss G Freedman.
