FERINO scored her first win for the stable in some style when she rounded up her rivals with a withering burst at Eagle Farm on Wednesday.
The Kiwi mare appreciated a bit of give in the ground and the step up to 1800m as she launched from the back of the pack under a patient Noel Callow ride.
Callow used all his experience to settle the daughter of Tarzino, who raced a touch keenly in the early stages due to the moderate tempo.
Once Callow had peeled her to the outside, FERINO engaged top gear to justify favourtitism and collect a cheque for $21,000.
“She’ll get over further ground in time as she’s by Tarzino,” said David.
“We were always going to give her time and be patient with her, because she’s still learning her craft. Noel had to think the whole way, he made the right decision by creeping closer and staying composed. It was a good experience for the mare, she’s a good chaser and she showed a great turn of foot.
“I was a bit nervous because she needs a bit of work and we weren’t able to do that given the weather conditions recently, so it wasn’t the ideal preparation for the race. But she overcame that and put on a great performance.”
