ASTERIA showed plenty of untapped potential when she made an eye-catching debut for the stable at Ipswich.
The full-sister to Stakes winner Profiteer had made an impression when winning a Sunshine Coast trial by 11 lengths, and whilst the margin of her victory in the Maiden Plate wasn’t quite as impressive, she still showed an explosive turn of foot.
Since arriving at Vandyke Racing from Sydney earlier this year, the filly has progressed and matured nicely and despite tiring in the latter stages of the 1100m contest, there’s no doubt she will be competing at a much higher grade in the future.
Having pinged the gates under jockey Jim Byrne, ASTERIA soon got into her stride and promptly opened up a gap of some 12 lengths over the rest of the field at the half-way mark.
The heavy ground may have taken its toll as her rivals made up some ground from the 200m mark, but the daughter of Capitalist had the race sewn up some way from home and eventually won by just under two lengths.
Many congratulations to the team at Laurel Oak Bloodstock and their fellow owners: Inspire, Mr D J Tamblyn, Mr D J Tamblyn, Mr A R Bennett, Mr T W Watson, Mr P I Sweeney, Mrs I Filippone, Dr P J Storey, Mr P T Blair, Mr A N Fitzgerald, Mr B R O'Reilly, Mr G W Aldridge, Mr T D Millard, Mr I G Mathieson, RACINGARENA, Mr R Corless and Mr K J Hayes.
