ANNIE ONE READY ended her part-owner’s long wait for a first winner when she broke through in style at start number two at Ipswich on Wednesday.
The filly’s explosive win from off the pace sparked scenes of jubilation as Rob Matthews toasted his first ever winner – after nearly four decades in the ownership game.
Victory also continued the stable’s hot streak, making it three winners from our last three starters after Sunday’s twin success for her stablemates KILNA and LADY LUCIFER.
Jimmy Orman, who was also on board LADY LUCIFER, rode a very patient race on ANNIE ONE READY, content to sit off the breakneck speed being set by the runaway leader.
Despite having to make up a sizeable deficit in the straight, both horse and rider set about the task with relish as they pounced on the second favourite to score an ultimately soft win.
“Rob had horses in the old days with the likes of Dr Geoff Chapman and Neville Begg, and this was his first ever winner,” said David.
“He brought his wife Ann with him here today, and they’re in tears. After nearly a lifetime in the game, he can’t believe he’s finally got his first winner. I’m sure he’ll be watching the replay many times and having a big night.
“All my pre-race instructions went quickly out the window when she was slowly away, but that’s why Jimmy Orman is our best rider, because he didn’t panic and was comfortable sitting back in the second half of the field.
“I still can’t believe she got up from the position they were in, and I also can’t believe she’s as good as she is because it’s like she’s the stable pony. She doesn’t have a bad bone in her body and she was falling asleep saddling up, but she can definitely run. It’s typical of Better Than Ready, he can throw a tough horse that’s quiet and easy to deal with.”
Victory took her earnings to the brink of $50,000 thanks to some handy QTIS bonuses, congratulations to Rob and his fellow owners: Mr K R Bredhauer, DVD Racing, Mr A D Delacy, Mr S J Goicoechea and Mr R A Fletcher.
