ADALIE showed a sharp turn of foot to score a well-deserved maiden win at the Sunshine Coast.
The filly had put the writing on the wall with a slashing second at her previous start, and went one better in Sunday’s Maiden Handicap (1000m).
The daughter of Exceed And Excel jumped from the inside gate before settling two pairs back under Ryan Maloney.
With 200m to travel, ADALIE still had three lengths to find on the leaders but once Maloney had clicked her into top gear, she lengthened her stride impressively to run out a comfortable winner.
“She didn’t begin quite as well as I’d anticipated, so instead of leading I elected just to leave her alone,” said Maloney.
“They weren’t going quick up front and she was over-racing a bit, so she did very well to pick herself up from the canvas and run them down.”
The 3YO was doing her best work late and is likely to get over further in time, but a first win at start number three and a cheque for $16,800 was a good place to start.
Many congratulations to her owners from the Heran family.
