Future looks bright for Cottons Fields after debut win

Cotton Fields, a 3yo filly by Deep Field, made it a perfect start to her racing career with a comfortable 1.25 length victory at Doomben today.

Jockey Ryan Maloney took advantage of a good gate, putting Cotton Fields in the perfect position from the outset, settling fourth in the run and one horse away from the fence.

Traveling well under Maloney, Cotton Fields moved to third as the field made the turn and straightened for the run to the Judge.

At the 250m mark, Cotton Fields was still in arrears of the leading by a length, a margin that was being whittled away as Maloney urged the filly along.

Approaching the final 100m of the race, Maloney asked Cotton Fields for her final effort and she responded in very encouraging fashion – so much so that inside of the last 50m, she not only drew level with the leader but went by to establish a margin on the line.

It was the start of a productive day for the stable, with Dolly Spartan and Weboughtazou, both running well in their respective events, finishing third and fourth.
